ABOUT CERTAINTY CHARTERS

Tokkie Hugo was born in Odendaalsrus on the 9th of Sept 1955. From an early age he would earn pocket money during the school holidays, by fishing off commercial fishing boats.

In 1980 and Tokkie got his first deep-sea boat. The same year he went to Sodwana Bay where he started fishing deep-sea. Tokkie gained a lot of experience in Marlin fishing when he crewed for Andre Olivier on the boat “Dingo” that fished the Great Barrier Reef for a few months.

Since 1981, Tokkie has had 3 deep see boats. Currently he uses a Two Oceans Magnum 25 for his charters. The boat is specially rigged for S.A. surf conditions and is ideal for Game fish, Billfish and broadbill.

Tokkie and his son, Carinus, have been running a commercial fishing charter business for the last 18 months. They have also setup a tented camp just outside Sodwana Bay.

Since he first started deep sea fishing, Tokkie has caught more than 800 billfish, including Black, Blue, Stripped & White Marlin, Swordfish, Spearfish and Sailfish.

During the late 1980’s, he did 4 trips to the Azores Islands, where more or less 200 Blue and White Marlin, Broadbill and Spearfish were caught. In 2001 he fished in a billfish competition in Mozambique where the first prize was $ 1 million. The fish had to weigh 800lb to register. On the first day he nabbed a 840lb Black Marlin, in so doing won the first prize of R 12,8 million.

Tokkie has a particular interest in catching (and releasing) Broadbill. He has won many a Broadbill competition in the Cape. Currently, he is the only charter that has caught Broadbill and do broadbill chaters in Sodwana Bay.

Since Tokkie started commercial charters in 2009, he has won 2 of the biggest competitions, the Mynmanne and the Billfish 15000. Each competition drew an entry of over 90 boats. In the Billfish 15000 he won prizes in excess of R 700 000 as well as breaking 2 of the competitions records up coming for the 24th anniversary. It is interesting to note that the Billfish 15000 is classified as the biggest billfish surf launching competition in the world and the 3rd biggest Billfish competitions in the world. An indication of the size of this competition is the number of Protea fishermen that enter into this competition. In earlier years, prior to 2009 he won 2nd and 3rd prizes on several occasions.

In 2009 Certainty Charters has caught and released 48 Marlin, several sailfish and spearfish. In 2009 the largest Black Marlin caught in was 296kg and the largest blue marlin weighed in at 278kg. Certainty Charters are aiming to catch about 100 Marlin for the year 2010.
